What are the Print Finishing methods?

You can choose to protect your print with various laminated finishes. Lamination involves applying an ultra-thin plastic film to any board or paper and is more commonly used in matt, gloss or velvet finishes. A lamination cannot cover a specific area alone, but covers the whole sides of a document. With this print finishing method, the appearance of a paper can be enhanced at a relatively low cost. It will also make the paper long-lasting and offers water resistance.

Another print finishing method is UV (ultra violet) varnish. An area of a design is covered with a transparent coating that feels smooth and thick. UV varnishes come in an array of finishes which brings out the colours in the page and are available in matt, gloss and glitter. The benefit of using UV varnish is that it enhances specific areas such as images, logo or text rather than covering a whole page. You can create a more diverse result by using it in conjunction with a laminate and then printed over the top.

You can also accentuate your print with a spot UV, in which you choose a particular item on the page to cover in UV varnish. This adds vibrancy to the item and can be very eye-catching when you notice the contrast of the spot UV element to the rest of the page. Other finishes will include standard creasing, folding, saddle stitching, perfect or PUR (polyurethane reactive) binding for your brochure or magazine.
