Hot Foiling is the process of adding a thin sheet of glossy or matte metal to a paper or card substrate using pressure and adhesive. Hot, because heat is used in the process. When you see shiny lettering on a makeup carton or business card, you are looking at foiling. It can be used to attract attention, make an impact, add a sense of luxury or in some cases add security to a document.
Foil Printing
The foiling process uses a die that punches a microscopically thin sheet of metal onto a prepared surface. The foils are available in hundreds of variations including silvers, golds, coppers as well as metallic colours - beautiful blues, reds and greens, as well as matte and pastel shades, holograms, antique and iridescent effects.
Embossing
Embossing is similar process to foiling in that a block is made to emboss (raise) or deboss (punch in) areas of a substrate using a die or plate. The effect is a tactile area of raised or lowered substrate; it can be applied to text or parts of an image.
